Amazon Fresh store slated for Bailey’s Crossroads might never open

An Amazon Fresh grocery store was planned for this space in the Crossroads Center.

The Amazon Fresh grocery store slated for the Crossroads Center in Bailey’s Crossroads appears to be in limbo, the Washington Business Journal reports.

Amazon is experiencing huge losses and is closing some grocery stores and cutting back on plans to open new ones, states an article posted by WSJ on Feb. 7.

At least eight Amazon Fresh or Amazon Go stores planned for the D.C. region haven’t opened, including the one at 5821 Crossroads Center. That 40,000-square-foot store has been completed and has been sitting vacant for months.

Neither Amazon nor the landlord responded to media requests for comment.

“We’re doing a fair bit of experimentation today in those stores to try to find a format that we think resonates with customers, is differentiated in some meaningful fashion, and where we like the economics,” said CEO Andy Jassy in a fourth-quarter earnings call, as reported by WBJ. “We’ve decided over the last year or so that we’re not going to expand the physical Fresh stores until we have that equation with differentiation and economic value that we like.”

Amazon reported $2.7 billion in losses in operating income worldwide during the fourth quarter of 2022. That was partly caused by $720 million in expenses related to impairments of property and equipment and operating leases for Amazon Fresh and Amazon Go grocery stores, Chief Financial Officer Brian Olsavsky said during the earnings call.

The company opened eight grocery stores in the D.C. region since May 2021, including one in the City of Fairfax.

  1. This is just wonderful. A comment source where I don’t have to be concerned if it’s viewed by the manager of the store. I’m a trainee at a Amazon Fresh Store, in La Habra, California. I’ve been there since July 7, 2022. I Just go kicked out of the kitchen for lack of shaving and shabby cloths. It’s my personal opinion of the reason why. Though the manager of the store said I didn’t order Zappo shoes yet and wouldn’t wear a Amazon Fresh shirt. The order of the shirts that I was given about 3 to 4 mo. ago was too tight. And none other to my liking arrived until Peak season. The Amazon Fresh stores are a good venture. I first thought it just a complementary justure for Amazon customers. But after I found out a partial rough draft amount of Amazon’s investments my thoughts differed. I see it as advertisment for the Amazon Fresh store. The majority of people you mention it to only have a vage idea of what it’s all about if none at all. I’m in the process of trying to transfer from on Amazon Fresh store to another. From La Habra CA. to Pasadena CA. Reason being for hardship. The Lahabra store is about a one hours drive. The Pasadena store is about 20 minutes. Plus being under the pressure of some of the store’s staff. Be it normal associates, Training embassadors, Leads, managers, or manager.

  2. According to another recent Washington Business Journal article I was able to see, the Bed Bath and Beyond at the same Crossroads Center mall is not on the list to be closed.

  3. I would be interested on a follow up to this. I’ve been pretty excited about this store and waiting for it to open.

  4. If they cant make the business model work in the more trendy, younger demographic, they will never open this location. I’ve lived in this area for 24 years and that location (former Safeway) was plagued with theft, panhandling and other operational challenges. They’ve missed their opportunity IMO to ever be successful.

  5. You are absolutely right. In it something is also to me it seems it is excellent idea. I agree with you.
