Annandale Blockbuster closing, and Advance Auto Parts moving in

The Annandale Blockbuster is closing March 24, and Advance Auto Parts will move into that location, at 7448 Little River Turnpike in the Little River Plaza Shopping Center.
The Advance Auto Parts store isn’t scheduled to open until 2014, said a spokesperson for the Roanoke, Va.-based company. There are 10 Advance Auto Parts stores within 10 miles of that spot, including one in the Bradlick Shopping Center at the intersections of Backlick and Braddock roads.
Meanwhile, the Blockbuster is having a closing sale, with everything marked down 10 to 30 percent this week and most DVDs priced at $10. If you sign up for Blockbuster’s online service in the store, the first two months are free, said David Gold, the store’s manager. The furniture and shelves are for sale, too.
The Annandale Blockbuster opened in 1988, Gold said, and was profitable. It was one of just a few Blockbusters left in the area after a massive wave of store closings last year. When it shuts down, the only Blockbuster left in the area will be in Woodbridge.
Blockbuster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2010 and was purchased by the Dish Network Corp. in 2011. Newer options for videostreaming movies like Netflix and on-demand cable services, along with pop-up kiosks like Redbox, have hurt brick-and-mortar movie rental stores. Dish announced plans in January to close about 300 Blockbuster stores, which will leave 500 in the United States.

It seems like every day I open this blog, Annandale is just becoming more upscale with the: thriving loan shark mortgage companies and the gang operated businesses with a touch of Goodwill and a dash of thriving commercial junkyard sales and drive by residential used car lots we are truly becoming the metro area's honey PIG capital……..charming!
Nothing like a touch of the lower classes to bring in new revenues and drive our real estate and quality of life right down into the river! Fairfax may have to be re-evalutated by the Feds for it watershed pollution!

To Anon No. 1: what kind of upper class car do you need that never needs parts?
Annandale has actually lost two auto parts stores on Columbia Pike in the past 10 years: Fairfax Auto was in the space now occupied by Joseph's Coat, and JK Auto Parts in the building on the corner with Little River that's now a martial arts studio.
And please, it's not like Blockbuster was much of, well, a blockbuster, in the past few years.
The point was that there Annandale is being flooded by allot of junk stores. All though I use Advanced Auto, there as frequent as the Seven Elevens.
Overall Annandale is getting to appear as if it is now the forgotten step child taking anything it can get. Baileys, Annandale and Seven Corners are all losing mid-level retail to discount and big box junk stores. It with that comes the garbage, trash and crime that are typically associated with a critical mass of discount retail in high concentration.
It will be interesting to see how the new shops at Mosaic fare. The Target and movie theater will draw people to the area, but even so, I wonder how many will still be open a year from now. I do hope that project succeeds.
Pep Boys is the only game in town and needs competition. Who rents DVDs anymore anyway?
There is already another location in down the road off of Braddock and Backlick. Does not make much sense unless the goal is to circle and eventually run Pep Boys out of Annandale.
I agree, Blockbuster was on a downward spiral. But, it was still fun to go with a group of kids and let them pick out a movie. Guess we'll be joining Netflix now. Car parts store will be nice to have. At least it's something useful too.
I suspect most upper class (and quite a few middle class) folks get their cars serviced professionally, and so rarely venture into an auto parts store.
OTOH movie rental places are doomed by digital distribution.

I think he cares for her, but she loves another. He always lets her stand in the shade on hot days.
That blockbuster was one I went into daily, and was always flooded with customers, gonna be a shame to see it go. Used to have this really mean store manager running it, enjoyed the new store manager and felt like he did an excellent job.
