“My family is okay. That is the important thing,” said Roldan
Ugarde, who said his wife and their children, Scott, age 5, a kindergartner at
Mason Crest Elementary School, Catherine, age 3, and Matthew, 16 months, all
got out safely, along with the other tenants.

Fire investigators hadn’t officially identified the cause of
the fire, but Ugarde said one of the occupants had left a candle burning on a
kitchen counter. The fire started on the first floor and spread to the attic. Ugarde’s
family was in the living room watching TV when they smelled smoke and
a carbon monoxide alarm sounded.

Several neighbors who had gathered outside to watch the firefighters
work on the property said they had seen flames and smoke. The fire did not
spread to any other houses. About a dozen Fairfax County fire trucks were on
the scene, including units from Annandale, Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners,
and Merrifield.

Ugarde, a construction worker originally from Argentina, said
he had lived in the house on Wayne Drive for about five or six years. He
was trying to contact the owner, but had left his phone inside. His
family was planning to spend the night at his sister’s place in Arlington.

This is what you get with illegal boarding houses. House fires resulting in 8 displaced people. Hopefully they make their new illegal residence outside of the Mason District.
We're Annandale, not Fauquier County. We value diversity, hard work and upward mobility- everything that these people represent. If you haven't noticed, Mason District votes very progressively. I don't thing that these people are the ones to consider relocation.

They wouldn't be wrong to be concerned, provided there was something wrong with it in the first place (and there may be, but who knows). I was simply stating that people are going to latch on to the "along with other tenants" to mean, "along with 8 illegal borders that park their vans on my nice lawns." Looks like I was correct.
But they are "in my backyard" and I'm okay with it.
If government did its job and appropriately screened these people from coming in, we wouldn't have this discussion. Do you leave your doors unlocked, do you let anyone in your house with out an invitation or appropriate id? Probably not, so why does our government do it and why do we have to pay for it in the end, through loss of life, loss of safety, loss of property, loss of real estate value, and loss of our quality of life.
Government is NOT DOING ITS JOB; local and national. They only seem to be concerned about their jobs, re-elections and special interest groups, not us!
We have reached, as they say, an impasse. I'm a bleeding heart liberal and grandson of an illegal immigrant; and you appear to be a nativist upset with a government too big to care. No minds are going to be changed here. Peace!

Sorry for their loss. That house is listed as a four bedroom two bathroom. So this is a family of 5 with three additional tenants? So much for code enforcement.
I came into this same neighborhood living with three unrelated adults. We worked, paid taxes and eventually the place transitioned to a single family home. Enough already with the xenophobic comments. It's the American dream to move in and then up. Are people afraid that in moving up they'll displace those looking down on them?
If folks need to live this way to get through tough times, so be it. However, it most cases, the house gets ruined downed, overcrowded, fire codes are typically violated with numerous make shift cooking appliances and space heaters. Electrical circuits are overloaded, many cars end up in the driveway and on front lawns.
You may be the anomaly but not the norm. This abusive over reach of make believe relatives and a less than savvy County Code Compliance office is one of the many reasons Annandale and Mason are in decline. Until this is reconciled with reality, we will continue to see unfortunate peoples' lives put at risk, the value of our real estate decline and businesses moving out. Our leaders need to wake up, our immigrant community needs to be less greedy and more respective of their new neighbors and code compliance needs to go back and get effective training on compliance rules that work,

Bingo, and many of the new immigrants don't get that, they will pack them in rooms just to get rent. There are allot of people taking advantage of poor undocumented workers moving into this county. And everyone gets hurt when the county has lose and badly enforced laws: the immigrants, the neighbors, our economy and our quality of life…….damn shame!
That genie's been out of the bottle for some time. Mason District has long since moved irrevocably from the Old Dominion days to where the rest of the country is headed. These families in our neighborhood want the same things everyone else does. I don't think that this particular residence counts as a slave-labor sweatshop. They just seem to be working stiffs trying to make a living. Whether people eat at Anthony's or across the street at IHOP, we're all part of Annandale now.
Thank you Adam Goldberg for being a stand up guy and not posting as 'anonymous' – A family with young children lost their home yesterday so let's not lose sight of that and consider how we can help instead of criticize.
If we had more affordable housing units in Mason District we would have less overcrowding in the single family homes! Also, I post anonymously for my own safety – I don't want some nut finding out where I live and harassing me about my opinions I post on here. You're not doing yourself any favors by posting under your real name but if you like living on the edge, go for it!
My foot we would have less illegal boarding in single family homes if we added more affordable housing units. It will ALWAYS be cheaper to cram 8 renters into a single family home.
How's it any different from giving your real name to someone you meet at a coffee shop, or at a bar, or at the gym? people act like posting your name on the internet is inviting identity fraud, but if you chatted some people up out in public and gave them your name you wouldn't think twice.
To Adam and Karen – posting anonymously is a personal choice. In national or regional fora, I go by my own name. Neighborhoods are too close to home. I'm the liberal Anonymous and, in this case, I also prefer the discretion this provides.
When I see a discussion getting ugly, I am determined to speak up on the issues, but as this is a local post in my neighborhood. I don't want to worry about my car getting keyed or my trash knocked over.

The owners, see below as Buck and Apostolico-Buck, who purchased the property in 2003, are listed as "owner occupants" of a property that the Tenants Ugarde, plus 7, have been renting for 5-6 years.
The county tax roles are a sham and not dependable for veracity.
This insurance claim should be quite interesting!
If the insurance company does not know this is a rental, loss may not be covered. What are the chances the tenants have insurance? Just how long do you think it will sit as a burned out mess? Thank you for that voice of reason Ellie. It always amazes me that compassion just flies away for people who have just suffered such a devastating trauma as fire. While I am sometimes amused by the rants on this blog I am also saddened at the hateful spew that goes on here. Apparently these are people who have a lot of free time on their hands and this is an avenue for them to feel satisfied. I would suggest the root of their problem lies in their mirror image. Perhaps getting off their butts and going out to help or improve their community would be a more productive path. But I doubt they would embrace that as it's more fun to be the troll under the bridge biting at anyone who doesn't agree with their hateful perspective.
Our local governments are being starved by the federal dysfunction and property values haven't bounced back enough to offset this. Local officials are left scrambling to do more with less. This is not a defense, it's a reality. The same people who complain about lack of enforcement support the federal cutbacks, that way they can say, "See? Government doesn't work." Well, it's our government folks but now it's paid for by self-interested corporations and the headline distractions prevent us from solving our biggest problems as we get caught up in the day's events rather than focusing on working together to develop long term strategies to solve our problems. Low expectations will always be realized when we refuse to get beyond the rants and move into the realm of possibility.

Local Governments being "starved" by the Feds? First, it is not the job of the Feds to feed Local Governments. Second, if the Feds were not so bloated, inefficient, expensive, and incompetent, there would be adequate funds available for Local Governments.
