Annandale High School’s long-awaited Broadway Desserts, originally scheduled for January but postponed due to a snowstorm, is happening this week, May 29-31.
An Annandale High School tradition for the past 16 years, Broadway Desserts is a magical mix of show tunes—performed in a cabaret-style setting by choir groups and individual students—and delicious desserts.
Students will perform songs from such well-known musicals as “Godspell,” “West Side Story,” “My Fair Lady,” “Gypsy,” ”Hairspray,” “Jersey Boys,” “Les Mis,” “Guys and Dolls,” “Dreamgirls,” “Camelot,” “Seussical,” “Chicago,” and “Grease.”
A bonus performance recently added to the program is “Lida Rose/Will I Ever Tell You?” from “The Music Man.” The song, featuring by James Barker, Gabi Montes de Oca, Steve Aderton, David Furney, Leif Jomuad, and Michael McLean, was nominated for a Cappie award in the “best song” category.
Cappie Awards are the high school version of the Tony Awards, given to outstanding high school theater productions in the D.C. region. All Cappie Best Song nominations will be performed at the National Capital Area Cappie Gala at the Kennedy Center June 8.
The Annandale Theatre Company of AHS produced “The Music Man” in March. The barbershop quartet from the show (Aderton, Furney, Jomuad and McLean) were also nominated for a Cappie for Best Ensemble.
Broadway Desserts takes place at Annandale High School’s Watson Auditorium, 4700 Medford Drive, Annandale. Shows are 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 29; 7:30 on Friday; and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Tickets for the evening shows are $15 presale and $20 at the door. The matinee is $10 presale and $12 at the door. Tickets can be purchased online using Paypal. Guests will be seated 30 minutes before show time.
