Annandale music teacher arrested for molesting children

Cummins [FCPD]

Fairfax County Police arrested Annandale music teacher Jeffrey Cummins April 16 for sexually abusing two former students.

Cummins, age 56, faces “eight felony counts of indecent liberties by a custodian,” FCPS reports.

Cummins taught private music lessons in his Annandale home. He is also the founder and artistic director of Virginia Music Adventures, a traveling music group for school-age children based in Annandale, and owns two Huntington Learning Centers, one located in Tysons and one in Springfield.

The police investigation showed that the sexual abuse occurred during music lessons and also at other times when the juveniles were at his home.

Detectives began their investigation in May 2018 when a juvenile disclosed that he had been inappropriately touched by Cummins over a period of several years. Another victim came forward in January 2019, who said he had also been abused by Cummins for several years.

Detectives from the Major Crimes Bureau’s Child Abuse Squad took custody of Jeffrey Cummins at Washington Dulles International Airport yesterday afternoon, after obtaining warrants April 11. Cummins was arriving at Dulles from international travel when he was arrested with the assistance of FCPD’s federal law enforcement partners.

The police believe there might be other victims. Anyone who is concerned that their child might have had inappropriate contact with Cummins should contact Major Crimes Bureau detectives at 703-246-7800. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through Crime Solvers.

    1. Thousands of pedophiles are arrested per year in the U.S. and yet because of news of a single arrest in Annandale in the Annandale Blog you have the audacity to label the whole city as garbage.

The garbage comes from within. Get a life.

    2. WRONG, check the data base, they are planted all over MASON and the surrounds. If you are going to be dumb at least do it intelligently. Get a brain.

    3. That's great 3:00PM. Dumb meets dumber. Maybe you should rent one of your rooms in your house to these pariahs and reduce Mason's burden.

    4. Adam – this is pretty common knowledge (not trying to be snarky but every adult should know and check it)

The sex offender database. The original poster is correct that Mason District has a large number of sex offenders. This is due to the homeless shelter and the over abundance of low cost housing. I have an offender several houses down from my own. I check the database every six months or so to see who has moved in and around the neighborhood. I recommend people doing it before buying homes if they have children. Although, like the poor schools it keeps housing prices down.

    5. If you have identity protection, one of the features is notifications of sex offenders. The one I have is offered by the Federal Govt/OMB. It will warn you when there has been activity or a change with regards to sex offenders and their locations in one's locality. Mine is always lighting up. The area is chock full of predators.

    6. You can thank Penny Gross for this and her obstinance to correctly manage the problem. She has over the years continued to pursue social service programs such as the new and enormous homeless shelter and the proliferation of section 8 housing. I am a democrat and have a heart, and have voted for Penny in the past because I believe she has one as well. But there is a time when reasonable common sense should prevail over our emotions. That has failed to happen in Mason District. And so with some remorse and trepidation I will be voting for the Republican candidate this November.

    7. Hmm, I don't think you're right though. There are 578 in FFX Co, and just 56 in our zip code (you can't narrow it down by district). Our zip includes more than just Mason, and even so that's only 10% of the county. If you just eyeball it too, the map shows far higher concentrations in Alexandria. Also, where are you getting a good correllation here between low-income housing and sex offenders? Sure, seems possible, but that's another pretty big claim. Also, our schools aren't poor. Also, our housing prices aren't down, they're up like 5% from last year.

  1. Adam thanks for your time and effort going through the data. But remember that the facts don't matter anymore. What 1:00pm anonymous does is to look around for negativity to complain about. Ignore what is good, extrapolate the bad and draw conclusions from it… The garbage comes from within.

    1. 10% is TOO HIGH. And building a high rise homeless shelter in our district will probably take that to a higher percentage now that homeless know they have the Ritz Carlton of homeless shelters in Mason District. Right smack in our commercial district. Shopping carts beware!
