Asiantque Market draws a large crowd

The Asiantque Market on April 28 was the biggest one so far.

More than 500 people enjoyed Thai food at the Asiantque Market behind the Masonic lodge at 6911 Columbia Pike Sunday evening.

This was the biggest crowd yet at the monthly food festivals, said organizer Nelson Figueroa Velez.

There were 26 vendors, offering grilled squid, dumplings, giant shrimp, coconut balls, grilled chicken, mussel pancakes, sugar cane juice, mango with sticky rice, and much more.

Velez, a native of Puerto Rico and an immigration attorney based in Annandale, launched the Asiantque events to raise money for International Embassy Inc., a nonprofit he founded dedicated to helping child victims of human trafficking.

The Asiantque Market is held monthly at the same location, 5-9 p.m., through October. The next one will be May 26.

The events usually include entertainment. At the April 28 event, however, the  DJ and the dance group that was scheduled to perform canceled at the last minute.

There is no admission charge, although visitors were scanned and counted to ensure the event doesn’t get overcrowded.

    1. The event was noted in an earlier article here in Annandale Today. Next one is…May 26! Now you know.

    2. The article says “The Asiantque Market is held monthly at the same location, 5-9 p.m., through October. The next one will be May 26.”

  1. What kind of scanning did they do? I have had tickets and phone QR codes scanned, but this event seemed not to have tickets. Facial scans maybe?

        1. I was curious about that too. The article’s last line is “There is no admission charge, although visitors were scanned and counted to ensure the event doesn’t get overcrowded.”, but doesn’t say what the scan was. Temperature for infection risk, facial recognition, security scan(a la airport), photo for promotional purposes…those are the top ideas that come to mind.

  2. There needs to be police next time to assist with pedestrian/traffic it’s a zoo on Columbia Pike u-turns, cars looking for parking, and people walking across the street someone gonna get run over soon!

    1. Yeah, it’s not too safe. Across the street in Broyhill Crest neighborhood, a car actually overturned on someone’s yard with another car being hit. It was pretty bad… People need to slow down and not been in a frenzy to find parking. Don’t worry folks, when you get to the food fest, it’ll be an hour or two wait for the food anyways.

    1. I’m glad you’re interested. However, this is not a traveling circus or rock band on tour–it’s a local community event. I’m sure my neighbors (who work hard to make this happen) would be happy to welcome you here.
