Board of Supervisors postpones Planning Commission hearing on RSUs

County Board of Supervisors agreed to defer the Planning Commission‘s Nov. 20 public hearing on a proposal
to amend the zoning ordinance to allow residential studio units (RSUs). That would
provide more time for additional outreach to the community, said Chair Sharon
Bulova.

That motion,
proposed by Bulova and Supervisor Michael Frey (Sully) and adopted by the BoS Sept. 24, also called for the
Planning Commission to establish a Residential Studios Committee. The committee will schedule five
meetings open to the public with opportunities for discussion.

The Mason District Council (MDC), Fairfax Federation of Citizens Associations, and other community groups have major concerns with the county proposal to allow RSUs, which are very small efficiency apartments, in low-density residential neighborhoods. Members of the MDC also complained that there weren‘t enough opportunities for public input.
“It is important that
the county hear from the various stakeholders affected by the proposed residential
studios amendment,” Bulova said. “The Planning Commission’s Residential Studios
Committee will provide an engagement process with the goals of addressing and
resolving questions and concerns associated with the RSU amendment.”

The Planning
Commission will go forward with the work sessions on RSUs scheduled for Sept.
25 and Oct. 2 at the Fairfax County Government Center. The Board of Supervisor’s
Nov. 19 public hearing on RSUs will be rescheduled.

The Residential

What a joke. The RSU committee is not even made up of the citizens – but the commissioners ? Mason District is screwed -!
Mason District has been screwed so often they have callouses in tender parts.
Just remember – many of you voted your Supervisor from Mason District in to office. If there could have been a serious primary challenger and some fresh ideas in the District, I wonder if some of this craziness would even happen with a different person in office.
This proposal did not come from the Mason District Supervisors office, so not sure why are you trying blame her for it. Sounds like you have a personal grudge.
It may not have come from the Mason District Supervisors office but she is doing nothing to stop it and she pushing it forward. It sounds like you work for the Mason District Supervisor.
Wow – so you think I work for her just because I pointed out the obvious that the proposal did not come from the Supervisor's office?? For the record, I do not. But I am tired of certain individuals who have their own political agenda who regularly post comments like yours. If you can't stand the heat (and facts being pointed out), then stay out of the comments section.
Residential studio units would vastly deteriorate middle class neighborhoods in Fairfax county. Communities built to house single families could not handle the increasd sewage caused by doubling or tripling the seize of households. Parking space would also suffer. Stidnt population would increase as would taxes. Quality of life would be adversly affected.
