BoS urges Youngkin to oppose Trump’s attacks on federal workers

A yard sign in Annandale.

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on March 4 approved a letter to Gov. Youngkin urging him to step up for Virginians affected by the Trump administration’s actions to slash the size of the federal government.

“We urge the governor to take action to prevent further attacks on Virginia’s federal workers and private sector contractors,” says Board Chair Jeffrey McKay.

The letter expresses the board’s “deep concern over the proposed relocation of federal agencies from the National Capital Region, a move that would have devastating consequences for Virginia’s economy, workforce, and the ability of federal agencies to efficiently and effectively carry out their missions.”

There are more than 175,000 federal employees in Northern Virginia. Federal agencies occupy 20 million square feet of space in Fairfax County, half of which is leased.

Relocating federal agencies from the region would not only affect those workers, but also the “private sector contractors who are the backbone of our economy,” the letter states. Federal government contract investments in Virginia exceed $108 billion, including $41 billion in Fairfax County in FY 2024.

“These investments fuel our local economies, sustain small businesses, and provide critical employment opportunities across the commonwealth,” the letter says. “The planned relocation of federal agencies would not only weaken the lives of thousands of Virginia residents but also weaken the agencies themselves by stripping them of the institutional knowledge and expertise concentrated in this region.”

“Fairfax County is doing all we can to support our impacted residents,” the board letter states. In contrast, Youngkin’s statements – “telling people they are getting what America voted for, that downsizing isn’t wrong, calling the process painful but necessary – are doing harm to our shared constituents.”

The letter urges Youngkin to call on Trump “to halt these reckless relocations and to stand with Virginia’s workforce in protecting the economic stability of our region.” It urges Youngkin to “tell the president that he is wrong, as past governors have done when Virginia’s economy is threatened.”

The letter invites Youngkin to brief the Board of Supervisors on his efforts “to support Virginians as they face this unprecedented assault.”

“If our Fairfax economy stumbles because of this, the state will stumble worse,” says McKay. “When that happens, people across Virginia will feel the direct impacts of a weakened Northern Virginia economy.”

On March 11, the board’s Economic Initiatives Committee will hear from the Fairfax County Economic Development Authority and other public and private sector representatives on the potential impact of the federal government’s actions.

  1. I love the latest woke signs!
I’m going to get a metal sign that says “I support the latest thing” so that all my weak tribal welfare recipients neighbors accept me as a fellow victim.

    1. Supporting people who chose a life of service to their country – getting less money than they’d get comparatively in the private sector – who are now being illegally mass fired under false pretenses is “woke?”

You got a funny definition of woke.

      1. I think woke refers to the practice of putting yard signs to support the latest thing.
And that is a glass-half-full assessment of federal workers, though I do feel bad for them personally.

        1. Can’t tell if you are trying to be sarcastic, but a little about the origin of the word ‘woke’

The phrase “woke” and to “stay woke” is not new — it began appearing in the 1940s and was first used by African Americans to “literally mean becoming woken up or sensitised to issues of justice”, says linguist and lexicographer Tony Thorne.

          1. Carolyn was not referring to the definition of woke. Carolyn was saying that Dirk was saying that putting yard signs up is a woke, left wing thing to do. I don’t understand why this is so confusing. LOL.

    2. Definition of woke: Being woke means being aware and knowing what’s going on in the community (related to racism and social injustice). It means to be awake to sensitive social issues, such as racism.

Definition of Liberal: willing to respect or accept behavior or opinions different from one’s own; open to new ideas. Relating to or denoting a political and social philosophy that promotes individual rights, civil liberties, democracy, and free enterprise.

Definition of Conservative : refers to a preference for traditional values and institutions, often opposing sudden change or innovation. It can also describe a cautious or moderate approach in various contexts, such as politics, social issues, or personal style.

Definition of Stupid: Unwillingness to know the definition of words but making foolish and biased comments about their meaning.

      1. I remember not long ago when we were taught what everything “means.” This apparently is the doctrine of intersectionality.

Stupid is as stupid does. Woke is as woke does.

Lawn signs are virtue signals of the woke. Dirk’s point stands.

  2. Thank you Board of Supervisors. These firings have a serious impact on so many Fairfax County residents, Democrats, Republicans and Independents.

  3. Let me give the Board of Supervisors a reality check about Northern Virginia’s economy. The cost of living has been trending outrageously unaffordable for some time. Maybe they didn’t notice, but not long ago I read an article about how young adults and families are leaving. Now I will soon be one of them. Surely you didn’t think the bubble was just going to expand and expand forever…wake up.

  4. The leftists on the BOS should all be fired and people who can make a budget and stick to it should be put in their place

  5. Paying them for not going to work hurts everyone in the country.

Anyone who commutes knows those workers only started back to work once trump was elected.

  6. Fairfax county has what is known as a “rich” person’s problem and it will end as the changes to the revenue happen. The Board of Supervisors is trying to look good for its constituents and at the same time protect the “golden goose” of federal dollars coming into this county. I don’t begrudge this, as without those taxpayer dollars coming in the Board of Supervisors would not be able to do all the spending they want and do. The Board would have to live within a much smaller budget/ means (like many of us have to do). The Board of Supervisors would actually have to deal with falling revenue and make difficult decisions to spend less and smarter, which should be done anyway as stewards for all in county instead of just special interests and developers. Many challenges are coming, such as county public sector unions would have to deal with consequences of unsustainable contracts that would have to change in unpleasant ways (Most state and local governments have this problem). In other words, the Board of Supervisors is SCARED that the reckless and irresponsible spending they enjoy and have come to expect could be ending. Thus blaming and crying out to others in desperation. As a federal employee it is personally difficult with these events, but the Board of Supervisors unquenchable thirst for more tax revenue has been negatively affecting the quality of life for many (including myself and family) and these events are forcing and accelerating a reckoning that has been in the making for years. Hope to see us all successfully reduce the tax burden, focus our county on essential core services, thrive through these difficult times, and remain an Annandale resident.

  7. Odd that Despite having all fed employee PII leaked to dark web multiple times and relentlessly attacked by scammers… it’s terribly hard to find the home address of these folks proposing cuts to fed careers and benefits. Seems to me they are actually behind the PII leaks and scams.
