In a case that drew national attention, Brendan Banfield was convicted of aggravated murder on Feb. 2 for killing his wife, Christine Banfield, 37, and Joseph Ryan, 39, Commonwealth’s Attorney Steve Descano announced on Feb. 2.

The crime occurred at the Banfield’s home in Reston on Feb. 24, 2023.

The jury convicted Banfield, a law enforcement agent with the IRS, of four felonies: two counts of aggravated murder, one count of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and one count of child endangerment.

The killings were part of an elaborate plot concocted by Brendan, 40, and the family’s Brazilian au pair, Juliana Peres Magalhaes, 25, who were having a romantic affair, Descano reports.

Beginning in January 2023, Brendan and Juliana created an account on FetLife, a platform to facilitate sexual meetups involving fetishes, purporting to be from Christine.

While messaging on the FetLife profile from “Christine’s” account, Brendan and Juliana took turns logging on to the website from Christine’s computer and messaging potential matches until they identified their second victim, Joseph Ryan.

Ryan, of Springfield, agreed to what he believed was a consensual sexual encounter involving a rape fantasy and planned to arrive at the Banfield’s home the morning of Feb. 24 with a knife as “Christine’s” account requested. In the months leading up to that encounter, Brendan took Juliana to a shooting range and bought a gun, and the two of them exchanged their phones for new ones.

Christine, a pediatric intensive care nurse, was off from work on Feb. 24. Brendan left the house shortly after 7 a.m. Juliana left around the same time, claiming to take the Banfields’ 4-year-old daughter to the zoo, though she remained parked in the cul-de-sac, waiting for Ryan to arrive.

When Juliana saw Ryan’s car, she called Brendan, who was waiting at a nearby McDonald’s, to put their plan into motion.

Brendan and Juliana went into the house, leaving the child in the basement, and confronted Ryan and Christine in the bedroom. Brendan shot Ryan in the head with his service weapon. Juliana also shot Ryan in the chest with another pistol. Brendan also stabbed Christine in the neck seven times with the kitchen knife Ryan brought to the house.

Brendan altered the crime scene to make it look as though Ryan had stabbed Christine. He moved her body and transferred some of her blood to Ryan’s hand. They called 911 at around 8 a.m., blaming Ryan for killing Christine.

Juliana, who had confessed to shooting Ryan at Brendan’s direction, was arrested on Oct. 19, 2023, and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

On Oct. 29, 2024, she pled guilty to manslaughter. She had been promised a more lenient sentence in exchange for testifying against Brendan. Her sentencing date is set for Feb. 13. Prosecutors have said they will recommend that she receive a sentence of “time served” for her cooperation, though the judge may impose a sentence of up to 10 years.

Brendan Banfield was arrested on Sept. 16, 2024. His sentencing date is set for May 8. He faces a mandatory life sentence for the aggravated murder charges.

In extending his “deepest gratitude to the detectives who handled his case,” Descano said, “This was an extremely complicated case, with significant amounts of digital and forensic evidence to assess, organize, and ultimately use to tell a clear story to the jury about what happened on February 24th and why.”

“A jury of Fairfax County citizens has spoken, and a generational double murder case with a guilty verdict is now behind us thanks to an excellent prosecution by the Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney, an abundance of forensic evidence, and a cooperating co-defendant,” commented Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis.

“Justice has prevailed despite a Machiavellian and diabolical effort by the defendants designed to distract us from the truth,” Davis said. “Our determination to uncover the facts prevailed, and a cold-blooded killer will now spend the rest of his life behind bars.”
