Brian Butler, the principal of Mount Eagle Elementary School, has been appointed the first principal of the new elementary school under construction at the Lacey site in Annandale.
Butler will begin his new job Jan. 3, 2012, Dan Parris, Cluster III assistant superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools announced Nov. 18.
“With a focus on collaborative practices that advance student achievement, he led Mount Eagle to the honorable distinction of being named a National Model Professional Learning Community,” Parris said.  He also guided Mount Eagle through a full school renovation from 2007 to 2010.

Butler has been an educator for more than 20 years, including stints as a teacher and counselor at the elementary and high school levels. He served as the assistant principal of Lemon Road Elementary School in 2004-06 before being named Mount Eagle principal in 2006.
Butler has given presentations on professional learning communities at national conferences and was a key member of a FCPS team that designed professional development programs for principals.
He completed his undergraduate degree in speech communications at George Washington University. Before embarking on a career in education, he played professional basketball in Europe. He then went on to earn teacher certification from George Mason University and completed a master’s degree in school counseling. In 2004, he earned his endorsement in school administration from the University of Virginia.
Two meetings have been scheduled for the community to meet Butler: Nov. 29 at Annandale Terrace Elementary and Dec. 6 at Woodburn Elementary. Both events start at 7 p.m.
