Buenos Grill to close Aug. 30

The Buenos Grill when it opened last fall.

Another Annandale business is shutting down: Buenos Grill is closing Aug. 30 after just 10 months in
operation. ā€œIt wasn’t financially feasible for us to stay open. It wasn’t
working out,ā€ said General Manager Christina Lee. ā€œWe had high hopes when it
opened. Some days were really busy; other days were slow.ā€

The much-anticipated Mexican restaurant opened on a long-vacant site of a former gas station on Columbia Pike in Annandale Oct. 31,
2012. Buenos Grill is across the street from the site of the former Bloom grocery store, which shut down in January 2012 just two years after it opened. While that was a result of a corporate decision to terminate the Bloom brand, the building has remained vacant for the past year and a half.Ā  Joseph’s Coat closed at the end of July after surviving just over a year in Annandale.
Christina Lee
said her father, Charles Lee, who owns the property, hopes to sell the restaurant to another management team or to someone
who wants to operate a different kind of business. She acknowledged that
neither she nor her brother whom she works with has much business experience.Ā

  1. Thats a shame. I've been there two or three times and its a nice enough place. I did wonder if there was enough business, however… it's not as though Annandale has a shortage of restaurants.

And it's a shame that nothing has yet gone into the old Bloom store, which seems like a good location to me. We could use a Trader Joe's or — here's a wild and crazy idea — an Aldi.

  2. We went once. The menu was kind of limited…and the location is not great. It was a bit too much like Chipotle for my taste. I would have preferred a real Mexican restaurant (or Salvadorean, or ….)

  3. I went there once. It was too "budget" for me both inside and outside, and it lacked warmth, with a strange "too open" layout. There was nothing exciting on the menu either.

I know they had a tough time getting approvals through the neighborhood so there was a resentment factor they were up against as well.

    1. I did not think the problems were with the neighborhood but the County. The land that he bought behind the building was zoned residential so he was having a hard time getting that changed to being zoned commercial by the County. Also the neighborhoods were excited for a new restaurant but what happened was his food was below par and there was no amazing service to go with the not very good food. A good sitdown Mexican restaurant could do well there if the food and serive was good.

  4. I'm sorry to hear this. I've been a few times and the food was quite good. I especially liked the non-standard items on the menu.

  5. I went once the food was subpar and the service was just average. I would love to see a nice sit down Mexican Food restaurant go in. There is a huge need for a good sit down restuarant in Annandale. I agree they need Pina Colodas and Margaritas. The place is beautiful but they put all their money in to the decor and not the food. What I do not understand is why they did not take tips from the customers and improve.

  6. The BOS needs to realize that Annandale is endangered. To save it, they need to draw the denser developer promised in the development plan, and to do that they need to implement the Complete Streets focused transportation plan. Cmon Penny, this can't keep getting kicked down the road.

    1. Penny really does not care about our District all she cares about is getting re-elected which our neighbors keeping doing. She has no deserve to build us up just bring us down.
