Bus routes planned for new Bailey’s Elementary School

Bailey’s Upper Elementary School is scheduled to open in September.

School buses traveling to the new Upper Bailey’s Elementary School in the morning will transverse the Ravenwood, Ravenwood Park, Buffalo
Ridge, and Sleepy Hollow Manor neighborhoods, according to a draft outline of
the bus routes prepared by Fairfax County Public Schools.
Upper Bailey’s ES is being developed in a former office
building at 6245 Leesburg Pike, Seven Corners, to relieve pressure on the severely overcrowded
existing Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences.

The draft bus route plan calls for six of the buses to
circulate around the Culmore area, then head to the new school building by
traveling along Nevius Street, Beachway Drive, Potterton Drive, Villa Lane,
Valley Lane, Nicholson Street, Castle Road, and Leesburg Pike. “The buses will
not pass through this neighborhood all at the same time. They will be staggered
with gaps between them,” the plan states.

Another route calls for a bus to pick up students in
Culmore, then travel along Leesburg Pike, turn left on Patrick Henry Drive,
pick up more students in Ravenwood, then get back on Leesburg Pike, turn left
on Castle Road, proceed along Castle Place, Sleepy Hollow Road, and Leesburg
Pike, making a right turn into the new school.
In the afternoon, five routes call for buses to exit the
school by turning right onto Leesburg Pike, right onto Nevius Street, left onto
Knollwood, and back to the old Bailey’s ES. The other bus would exit onto Leesburg
Pike, turn right on Patrick Henry and drop off students throughout the
Ravenwood area.

  1. "Upper Bailey’s ES is being developed in a former office building at 6245 Leesburg Pike, Seven Corners, to relieve pressure on the severely overcrowded existing Bailey’s Elementary School for the Arts and Sciences".

How about enforcing the zoning laws, provide family education/responsibility (if you can't afford one child don't have 2,3 or more) as well as eliminate bringing almost 300 kids from out of boundary to relieve the pressure on Bailey's, no? Ah, let's just build and build and when that fills up the county will build some more or take over some other building. The taxpayers will flip the bill. One day each grade at Bailey's will have their own building.

  2. None of those neighborhood streets is particulary conducive to large numbers of school buses, but Nicholson Street and Castle Road are particularly treacherous. I'm surprised the residents in those neighborhoods aren't screaming yet about this latest news. Maybe they're too busy prepping a lawsuit. Pass the popcorn!

  3. LOL. Yes, the residents of the Sleepy Hollow Manor and Lake Barcroft are aware that the new routes will go through their neighborhoods. We have been screaming trust me. Without a current traffic study, FCPS simply will not listen. It has been beyond frustrating!

    1. Keep screaming, Mason D. (as if your opinions represent all of us, but I digress). It appears you object to six buses in the morning and five in the afternoon. Forgive me for my lack of sympathy.
