Business owner honored for hiring people with disabilities

Robin Rinearson (right) teaches future employees the art of popcorn making.

Robin Rinearson, the founder of Jake’s Ice Cream, was honored with the Illinois College of Optometry Alumni Association’s Humanitarian Award earlier this month for her support of people with disabilities.

When Rinearson opened Jake’s Ice Cream in 2021 in Barcroft Plaza, she hired people unable to find jobs elsewhere because of mental or physical disabilities. She continued that effort when she opened Jake’s Gourmet Popcorn in 2023 in Seven Corners.

Rinearson led a developmental and pediatric optometry practice in Bailey’s Crossroads for 44 years, where she cared for patients with learning differences, autism, and developmental disabilities.

When she retired in 2021, she focused her efforts on establishing businesses that provide meaningful employment to adults with special needs. The ice cream shop and popcorn shop employ more than 30 adults with disabilities.

As an advocate for workplace inclusion, Rinearson has spoken to members of Congress and business leaders about the benefits of hiring people with disabilities.

  1. We visit Jake’s all the time. They hand make their ice cream and vary the flavors from week to week. Their selections are wonderful and so flavorful. Why has there been no official recognition of her work by any local or state official? Her efforts should be recognized.

  2. Jake’s Ice Cream is always first choice! Also appreciate that they have options for everyone like dairy free, etc. I love the variety at Jake’s Popcorn and I think it’s become as big a hit as the ice cream shop.

  3. We have been to the ice cream shop. Great ice cream and service! We did not know the story behind the business. We look forward to trying popcorn too! This is the way the world should operate.

  4. Im happy to come across people like myself that are disabled but accomplishing rewarding goals full force. This woman has brought awareness and acceptance to where it’s needed. Keep up the amazing journey 🙂
