Changes proposed for Wakefield courts

Pickleball at Wakefield Park.

The Fairfax County Park Authority plans to change the configuration of the tennis and pickleball courts at Wakefield Park in Annandale.

The park has nine tennis courts, two dual-use courts (two tennis courts and four pickleball courts), and two dedicated pickleball courts.

“Over time, the use of the dual-use courts has trended strongly toward pickleball and created fewer tennis opportunities,” the Park Authority states.

It is now proposing to convert one tennis court, currently in need of repair, into four pickleball courts and returning the two dual-use courts to tennis only.

The work would result in 10 dedicated tennis courts and six dedicated pickleball courts.

A second phase of the proposal calls for replacing one-half of a walled practice area with two additional dedicated pickleball courts.

The Park Authority is hosting a virtual community meeting on the proposal on July 9 at 7 p.m. The meeting will be streamed live on the county’s public input platform. A call-in option is available as well by dialing 855-925-2801 and entering meeting code 6161.

Community members will be able to submit comments online from July 9 to Aug. 8.

If the project proceeds, work on phase 1 could be completed by fall 2024. Phase 2 could be completed by spring 2025.

  1. If you’re a pickleballer then how about some support for FCPA and the implementation of their pickleball study criteria!

  2. This sounds like a reasonable proposal. It would be great if the county would facilitate open drop in play for pickleball at certain times, with either a sign up sheet, next paddle system, or other ways for individual players to be able to play with others who want to play!
