Community input sought on ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan

The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) wants to hear comments from the public as part of its process in developing the ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan.
Active transportation means self-propelled, human-powered travel, including walking, biking, hiking, running, and riding, and rolling (scooters, wheelchairs, and strollers).
The ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan will establish a vision and a roadmap for implementing safe, convenient, and enjoyable streets, sidewalks, bike facilities, and trails.
Community input will be accepted through May 1. There are three ways to provide feedback:
- Take a survey to let county planners understand how you use active transportation – to travel to a destination, for recreation, for exercise, or just for fun – and share your ideas on the future of active transportation in Fairfax County.
- Add your information into two interactive maps on destinations, barriers to active travel, and missing links in the active transportation network. Watch a video to learn how to complete the survey and map your ideas.
- Share your thoughts with the Active Transportation Team via email or call 877-5600.
A series of community meetings and additional engagement opportunities will be scheduled during the development of the ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan. To stay informed, follow FCDOT on Facebook and sign up for text or email alerts.
The ActiveFairfax Transportation Plan will develop a vision to help shape the future of active transportation and consolidate planning efforts into one cohesive document that is easy-to-digest and track performance.
The plan will also encourage livable street design and support access to safe, comfortable, and connected active transportation facilities – such as shared-use paths, bike lanes, and sidewalks – for people of all ages, incomes, and abilities.
The ActiveFairfax plan is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.
“Community input is critical to the success of this planning effort,” says Chris Wells, the active transportation program manager at FCDOT. “We want to hear all perspectives from families biking and walking within the community to individuals who use scooters and bike share as part of their commute. This is the only way to create a comprehensive and functional plan that truly supports the needs of the community.”
I encourage everyone to fill out this survey. As your neighbor, I serve on the Sidewalk, Trails and Bikeway Committee and am very interested in making sure that these critical pieces of infrastructure are put in place. For that to happen, the ActiveFairfax plan needs input from as many as possible. There will be additional public outreach. With our support, we can ensure that our end of the County has the active infrastructure it needs. If you have any specific, trails-related suggestions, feel free to identify them here.
I will look at the survey. Thank you. Katie
I took the survey. It was a bit lengthy but very comprehensive. Was happy to do it and hopes that it improves conditions in the county for cyclists who love to ride for enjoyment, destinations and work. Thank you James for your work.
