Construction of the Indian Run Gravity Sewer Replacement Project in Annandale is expected to begin in winter 2022.
The community is invited to a virtual meeting on the project Wednesday, July 28, 6-8 p.m. Join the meeting on Microsoft Teams here. You can also access the meeting by phone, 571-429-5982; access code: 834-548-546.
The project location is in and next to Indian Run Stream Valley Park. New sewer line mains will be installed near the Columbia Road and Montgomery Street intersection and crossing the Birch Lane cul-de-sac.
Roughly 640 feet of existing gravity sewer will be abandoned or removed.
The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) will relocate an existing gravity sewer pipe that crosses the Indian Run stream. That line is exposed (above ground level) in certain segments and fully exposed as it crosses the stream.
A sewer manhole along the stream bank (manhole #419) has been undermined by the stream.
The exposed pipe segments and the undermined manhole present a potential environmental hazard. The intent of the project is to remove this sewer crossing and relocate the sewer flows via alternative routes.
This $2.3 million project is nearing the end of the design process. The land acquisition phase is next. Once land acquisition complete, which should happen this fall, the project will be advertised to pre-qualified contractors.
During construction, road closures are expected near the Columbia Road and Montgomery Street intersection.
According to DPWES, the sewer replacement project will
- improve sewer system reliability in the neighborhood;
- prevent costly future emergency repairs;
- reduce future risk of sanitary sewer overflows; and
- reduce risks to public health and the environment.
