Connolly easily wins Democratic Primary

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-11th District) sailed to an easy victory in the Democratic Primary June 23, beating challenger from the left, Zainab Mohsini.

Connolly got 70.2 percent of the vote, compared to 29.8 percent for Mohsini. She did slightly better in Fairfax County, getting 31.2 percent.

Connolly will face Republican candidate Manga Anantatmula in November.

In the Republican Primary, Daniel Gade beat two other candidates for the chance to run in November for the U.S. Senate seat held by Sen. Mark Warner (D).

Gade easily won in Fairfax County with close to 12,000 votes. Thomas Speciale II got about 2,700, and Alissa Baldwin got 3,540 votes in Fairfax County.

Absentee voting was extremely high.

In Fairfax County, over 38,300 people voted absentee in the Democratic Primary, and 18,700 voted in person. Turnout for the Democratic Primary in Fairfax County was 15.9 percent.

In Fairfax County results for the Republic primary, nearly 22,360 people voted absentee and nearly 18,600 voted in person. Turnout was just 3.1 percent.

    Once again, white man wins over a minority woman.

    He should step down and give her his seat.

    1. No one said that Mohsini should be just given the seat. She needed to do her part to convince the electorate that she was a better candidate. She was unsuccessful. That should be it.

    2. Lead by example –
      White man in a position of power should step down for a black-brown minority woman.

      You can apologize all day, you can say that TJ has not enough students of color, but when push comes to shove – no real change occurs.

      Time for affirmative action – time for correction!
