Culmore Library to close for a year for HVAC upgrade

The Culmore Community Library will be closed for a full year for an upgrade of its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system, the Fairfax County Public Library announced Nov. 17.
The library will close on Jan. 17, 2026, and isn’t expected to reopen until January 2027. During that period, the grounds and parking lot will be closed, too.
In advance of the closure, books will be put in storage or transferred to another library. Some materials have already been removed.
While the Culmore Library is closed, FCPL encourages residents to visit other libraries, such as the Thomas Jefferson, Tysons-Pimmit Regional, and George Mason Regional libraries. Staff at any branch can assist customers with redirecting holds for pick up at nearby locations. Books can be picked up or returned at any FCPL branch.
The George Mason Regional Library will undergo a major renovation this year. Construction is expected to start in July or August 2026 and should be completed in 2028.

The Culmore Library underwent a major renovation 10 years ago. The library was renamed in 2024. It was previously known as the Woodrow Wilson Library.
“We understand that the temporary closure may cause inconvenience and appreciate the community’s patience and understanding as we work to improve our facilities for the long-term benefit of our patrons,” the FCPL states.

Wondering, was the HVAC not replaced 10 years ago during the major renovation? This work if needing a full year is far more than just replacing an air handler or boiler and seems like an oversight from the prior extended closure of the library.
I’m concerned about the length of this proposed closure. I remember how hot it was in the summer in the library, but does it really take more than a year to address HVAC issues? The building only reopened in 2015 after an extended renovation. It is also puzzling that the parking lot and grounds would be closed as well. Given how critical this library is for the surrounding high-need neighborhood, I urge the county to shorten the project timeline and keep as much of the site accessible as possible. A faster, more transparent plan would go a long way toward supporting the families who rely on this resource every day.
Ahh too bad I just started going to this library too, and it’s great for kids. A year is a long time just for an HVAC replacement… I had mine installed in a day. Granted, it’s a house compared to a library, but I don’t think an HVAC replacement would take a year anywhere…
I really feel for the homeless and local families that rely on the Culmore library as kind of a community center where they can go to use the resources necessary to help them . This will be really hard on the nearby families. I too question the length of the repair , I mean whole apartment buildings go up in less time than this will take . Seems like they should make this an ” extremely urgent ” fix and try to take care of this in a shorter amount of time . A whole year just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense with this . How many local people will be able to go all the way to Annandale or all the way out at the graham road area to get to a library? The county should make this a priority.
So both this library and the George Mason library will be closed at the same time according to the above like to that previous story, “Construction is expected to start in July or August 2026, and the project should be completed in 2028, King-Archer said.” Two major libraries close in proximity closed at the same time. This does not seem to be the smartest of decisions.
Can we fund buses or vetted volunteers to provide free transportation to other libraries?
Sounds very reasonable to me. Alternatively/in addition, a book-mobile program should be in the works.
However, as far as I can tell (from my out-of-any-loop position) , there are no such plans in place.
This is a big letdown, especially for the Culmore community! I would welcome any insight from those who may know more.
It cannot possibly require 365 days to upgrade the heating/air conditioning system.
Sounds Like another overpriced spending project for the county and disruption of services for our residents in Mason District.
1 year? Is this a joke? At this point, I wonder if our society wants to promote ignorance and ineptitude. Library was a safe haven for me when I was younger. Adults are failing. Our country is failing.
Suspect there’s a need for mold mitigation or asbestos removal, rodent infestations? Not to mention a sweet contract for someone known by the county staff? Who is doing the work? How was it competed and awarded? Seems like the COVID closings would have been a better time to do this work. But BoS was busy w zmod, closing lake Accotink, giving themselves a raise, and letting everything else fall apart?
