Cut energy costs with a thermal camera available from libraries

Thermal cameras show where energy is being wasted.

Fairfax County libraries have thermal cameras available to borrow that can be used to check for air leaks and areas of poor insulation in your home. The devices, which attach to a smart phone, are available to anyone with a library card.

By spotlighting those areas, homeowners can know where to improve sealing and insulation, and thus save money on monthly utility bills. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average homeowner could cut $200 to $400 a year on annual heating and cooling costs by fixing drafty doors, windows, or other air leaks.

A total of eight cameras are available for loan. You can reserve one online and it will be delivered to your library branch, beginning on Earth Day, April 22.  Visit the library catalog and search for “thermal camera.”
