Del. Kory launches re-election campaign

Congressmen Jim Moran and Gerry Connolly helped Del. Kaye Kory kick off her re-election campaign July 9 at a gathering at the home of Elaine and Jon Kent in Lake Barcroft.

Kory, a Democrat, was first elected to represent the 38th district in the House of Delegates in 2010 after serving 10 years on the Fairfax County School Board. The Republicans haven’t announced whether they will field a candidate to oppose her; the deadline to do so is June 11. The 38th district includes the part of Annandale inside the beltway and parts of Bailey’s Crossroads, Seven Corners, and Lincolnia.

Kory cited the landmark transportation bill passed with bipartisan support as the biggest accomplishment in this year’s General Assembly. Connolly said that happened because “the other party actually said no to Grover Norquist [president of Americans for Tax Reform who tries to get politicians to sign anti-tax pledges] and work on a compromise with the Democrats.” Funding the infrastructure is “one of the smartest investments you can make,” he said.

Moran pointed to Kory’s strong record on education and environmental issues. He urged the crowd to get out there and work on electing Democrats in the upcoming election. “We lose seats in off-year elections,” he said. “We need a tremendous turnout, or we’ll lose ground. . . . The alternative is just devastating.”

  1. Delegate, I hope that in the next session you will put some effort into supporting Scott Surovell's legislation to allow local jurisdictions to zone out payday lenders and car title lenders. This is a big problem in downtown Annandale — too many payday/title lenders — and I'm disappointed that the democratic caucus didn't throw more effort/weight behind Del. Surovell's bill.
