Democrats blast Republican bill to rename Dulles Airport for Trump

This sign is on westbound Little River Turnpike in Annandale between Pinecrest Vista Drive and Old Columbia Pike. It’s deteriorated quite a bit since this photo was taken.

A proposal by Republicans in Congress to rename Dulles Airport for Trump is sparking outrage among Democrats.

A bill introduced in the house by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-Pa.) states: “The Washington Dulles International Airport in Virginia shall after the date of the enactment of this Act be known and designated as the ‘Donald J. Trump International Airport.’”

Rep Gerry Connolly (D-Va.) responded with this statement: “Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, I’d suggest they find a federal prison.”

The airport opened in 1962. It is named for John Foster Dulles, a former secretary of state in the Eisenhower Administration who fought against communism during the early stages of the Cold War.

“If they name it after Trump, there could be continued round-trip service to Moscow,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-Md.).

When the proposal first surfaced, there was speculation that it was an April Fool’s joke.

Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Va.), a candidate for governor, called the bill “ridiculous, but sadly real.”

“Congress must act on pressing issues like reauthorizing the FAA and passing the national security supplemental,” Spanberger tweeted. “Yet this is what a member of the House Republican leadership focuses on – renaming Virginia’s Dulles airport after Trump.”

Reschenthaler, the chief deputy majority whip, issued this statement: “As millions of domestic and international travelers fly through the airport, there is no better symbol of freedom, prosperity, and strength than hearing ‘Welcome to Trump International Airport’ as they land on American soil.”

“One of Trump’s first acts as president was a racist Muslim ban that blocked permanent American residents from their own country,” Rep. Don Beyer (D-Va.) recalled. “I went to Dulles to try to help innocent people caught up in the chaos. I remember grandparents detained for hours as their terrified families waited.”

“I remember Republicans like those who wrote this bill hiding and giving mealy-mouthed responses when asked about the suffering Trump’s Muslim ban caused,” Beyer tweeted. “They know Dulles will never be renamed after Trump. That’s not the point, the point is to suck up to their Dear Leader.”

The bill’s co-sponsors are Reps. Michael Waltz (R-Fla.), Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.), Chuck Fleischmann (R-Tenn.), Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), and Troy Nehls (R-Texas).

The bill was referred to the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. There is virtually no chance it will be passed by Congress.

  1. The best part of this article is the photo – that random Dulles Airport sign on 236 between Braddock Road and Old Columbia Pike. Why is it there? 236 is hardly the route to take if you’re headed to Dulles, even before all road improvements in this region. I crack up every time I pass it.

  2. While this is ridiculous, I am glad they are getting a taste of their own medicine. They renamed L’Enfant Plaza, which was designed by the French general. Let them face their own ridiculousness a bit.

    1. Was L’Enfant Plaza named differently previously? The whole plaza wasn’t conceived until the early 50’s. L’Enfant laid out an overall plan for DC which has been reworked a bit over the years but still stands as an admirable urban design. The plaza was named in tribute to him, not renamed by ‘they.’ .

    2. L’enfant Plaza wasn’t designed by the French General. L’Enfant designed the original city of Washington. L’Enfant plaza is named after him.

  3. Would be happy to rename the airport after Trump if and when he steps down from politics. Sometimes you have to throw people a bone and make them think they’ve got a win.

  4. Lmao. Honestly I support this bill. I would rather have the airport named after a cartoonish former president than any Dulles brother. Those two are pretty damn close to pure evil and it’s irritating that we have a damn airport named in their honor.

  5. I submit that a more appropriate recognition of Trump’s performance would be to name a Prison after him, or at least guard tower – how’s Trump Tower sound?

    1. Trump will probably want payments from the Feds for the use of his name. That would be in keeping with his character.

  6. Aren’t these the same Republicans who get all butthurt when taxpayer money is spent to rename a school or road? “Who cares about a name,” they say?

Didn’t Fat Donnie want to add his face to Mount Rushmore? How about they propose that?

  7. Reschenthaler Should include in his bill an airport in Pennsylvania be renamed “Stormy Daniels International Airport”. Waltz could change Miami to “91 Indictments International Airport”. Ogles could rename an Tennessee airport “$59 Bibles International Airport” Gosar could change Dallas Ft Wirth to “39000 Lies and counting international airport” and Nehls could change Ft Lauderdale to “Inject Bleach International Airport”

  8. Too bad you have to descend into the Culture Wars, Ellie. You’ve clearly picked a side, Team (sanctimoniously) Righteous.

Do I like Trump? Hell no. But I’m not a fan of Biden, either.

  9. We had to endure Reagan National Airport being shoved down our throats despite Virginians objections and now this? Distraction from all the issues Congress is not solving.
