Democrats hold firehouse primary Tuesday for Virginia Senate District 39

A special election has been scheduled for Feb. 10 to select a candidate for Virginia Senate District 39 to replace Adam Ebbin.
Ebbin announced his resignation after being appointed by Gov.-Elect Abigail Spanberger to serve as senior advisor at the Virginia Cannabis Control Authority.
The Alexandria Democrats are holding an unassembled caucus, also known as a firehouse primary, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, to select a nominee for the 39th District.
Four candidates are on the ballot:
- Del. Elizabeth Bennett-Parker, a former vice mayor of Alexandria;
- Del. Mark Levine, the former host of a talk radio show;
- Charles Sumpter, the founder of Safe Space NOVA, a nonprofit that provides housing support and mental health services for LGBTQ+ youths;
- and Amy Jackson, a community activist.
Most of the 39th Senate District is in Alexandria and Arlington, but it does include seven precincts in Mason District: Bailey’s (501), Glen Forest (505), Holmes (506), Plaza (509), Crossroads (514), Willston (517), and Skyline (520).
Voting in the firehouse primary will be conducted 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m. at John Calvin Presbyterian Church, 6531 Columbia Pike, Annandale; the Charles Beatley Central Library and Charles Houston Recreation Center in Alexandria; and the Aurora Hills Library in Arlington.
