The Pawtiques dog grooming salon is now accepting students interested in a career as a dog groomer.

The salon, at 4207 Tom Davis Drive in Annandale, has been certified as a dog grooming academy by the State Council for Higher Education for Virginia.

The 460-hour, 16-week course includes hands-on and theoretical training covering grooming techniques, bathing, cutting, CPR and first aid, health assessments, how to work with hard-to-handle dogs, and how to use and maintain clippers and other grooming tools.

Professional dog grooming involves more than just a wash and trim.

“There’s a lot to learn,” says co-owner Mira Kim. “People underestimate what dog groomers actually do for pets.”

The Pawtiques Dog Grooming School will also offer business advice for students who want to start their own dog grooming service, adds co-owner Samantha Kim.

Tuition is $7,000 which includes $1,000 worth of grooming tools.
