Driver charged in fatal pedestrian crash

Alexandria Police have identified the driver and victim in a fatal pedestrian crash on Route 7 at Dawes Avenue on April 16.

Abdullahi Mumin, age 19, was struck in a hit-and-run crash at about 8:40 p.m. He was rushed to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The driver, Jilmar Doria-Medina, 42, of Fairfax, was driving a gray Acura. He struck at least three vehicles in the Skyline area before hitting a light pole and striking Mumin.

Fairfax County Police initially charged Doria-Medina with driving while intoxicated and two counts of hit-and-run. Alexandria Police subsequently charged him with aggravated manslaughter and DWI.

Doria-Medina is being held without bond at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.

When I was in high school (a gazillion years ago), I was president of students against drunk driving – it was personal for me as my dad was hit by a drunk driver but thankfully survived without any long-term damage. WHY are people still drinking and driving. This is horrific and this makes me so incredibly sad. So many lives lost. Please, we have so many options now. Call for uber or a friend but don’t drink and drive. Off my soapbox.
