Beginning on or about Thursday night, March 19, the eastbound Edsall Road ramp to Interstate-395 South will be rerouted to eliminate a congestion point and to permit the reconfiguration of the I-395 South/Edsall Road interchange.
VDOT urges drivers to be alert and watch for directional signs. The work could be delayed in case of inclement weather.
This rerouted ramp is part of the Express Lanes project, a public private partnership between VDOT and Transurban. The eight-mile I-395 Express Lanes connect the 95 Express Lanes to Washington D.C.
I really think this is going to cause backups with the truck traffic coming from the industrial park. As it is now, after the intersection at Cherokee, they can continue without signal north- or south-bound on 395. Requiring trucks to stop at a signal a short distance away from the intersection at Cherokee risks significant back ups along that stretch, which could then cause problems for the 395 northbound ramp.
I wish they had kept the south-bound ramp for traffic on Edsall heading East, and had that traffic yield to the west-bound Edsall traffic that will ultimately turn left with a signal to go south on 395.
Hope it works out.
Changes are coming to other ramps at this interchange also but they must a few weeks later.
The ramp grade is backward for the eastbound Edsall Road ramp to Interstate-395 South. It was either designed poorly or built incorrectly. The eastbound road to 395 South has a very sharp tilt away from the proper bank/angle.
I hope it gets fixes before trucks roll onto their side or cars drift into westbound, 395 southbound entering traffic.
