Elevated walkway opens at Lake Accotink

The new elevated walkway below the Lake Accotink dam opened to the public on April 21.

The $3 million project is substantially complete, but crews are still working on a few punch list items, says Heather Lynch of the Park Authority’s Planning and Development Division.

The project was needed because the existing trail often flooded, stranding trail users, and was repeatedly damaged during storms.

The contractor, Franco’s Liberty Bridge Inc., build approximately 300 linear feet of asphalt trail improvements and 325 linear feet on an elevated concrete pedestrian crossing over the dam outfall.

  1. Great, a bridge over nothing, now that the BoS have cancelled dredging. Only in Fairfax where stupid~stupid.

  2. Even if the lake is turned into wetlands, it sounds like you could still use the path/trails. Instead of boating/kayaking you could observe restored wildlife such as herons, egrets, turtles, frogs, etc. as you walk around.

    1. All of which you can observe now along with fishermen. The lake currently has plenty of shallow wetlands areas – appreciate the glass is half full attitude, but the decision to not dredge enhances nothing.

      1. Other than not paying $50million for something that will continually need increasingly more investment. Why do you think that makes sense?

  4. The number of people that think we should waste a ton of taxpayer money to dredge this lake in perpetuity to benefit a small group of residents is too damn high

    1. I highly doubt a majority of FFX county residents would want to spend what? 50 million taxpayer dollars to dredge…only to need to dredge it again in the near future. Can’t swim in it…you’d be crazy to eat any fish caught in it. It’s a reservoir from WWII…let it reverse to it’s natural state I say!

  5. The Lake is a treasure, water, trees, turtles, jumping fish, birds, please keep this paradise.
