Fairfax County pauses yard waste collections this winter

Fairfax County will not pick up yard waste this winter, the Solid Waste Management Program announced on Dec. 17.

During the period from Dec. 25 through the end of February, yard waste must be bagged and placed in a trash cart. Yard waste left on the curb will not be collected.

Brush and tree limbs will still be collected if property owners request a special pickup. Residents who receive trash and recycling services from Fairfax County are allowed five free special pickups per fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

Natural holiday trees will be collected Jan. 5-16. The trees will be placed in a wood chipper with other brush. Residents can pick up this clean, good-quality mulch for free at the I-66 and I-95 Recycling and Disposal Centers.

      1. Less leaves after being shed. Less storm damage due to storms. As weak trees are eliminated, they don’t quickly reappear, removal of invasive species (formerly classified as “landscaping plants” (crepe Myrtle as an example). New to area but if a (no fee permit by email program could collect removal activity) the county could develop an automated management system over time to accurately manage anticipated. Volume to collected tonnage. Tree service companies could report info re: removal.

  1. Not sure this is the right place but here goes. Falls Church City has numerous 20 mph streets. Last week I was on one and got passed by a local citizen, next block he pulled into His (?) driveway. At the time I was doing 22 mph. He must have been doing all of 30.

  2. And the county is ‘studying’ takeover of private waste hauling….let’s pause on that for a second.
