Farewell to Master’s Costume

A couple of enormous Teletubby heads, a few Santa suits, various halloween costumes, some hats, and a large assortment of bunny suits–that’s all that’s left on the second-to-the-last day of the Master’s Costume shop on Columbia Pike.

The entire chain–with stores across the Virginia, Maryland, and D.C. region–is closing. The company has had a store in Annandale for the past 32 years, and it’s been in various locations in the Columbia Pike shopping center since 1992.

Movies have had a big influence on costume trends over the years, says store manager Howard Tucker, citing the popularity of pirate and Star Wars costumes. Gangsters, flappers, hippies, and 70’s characters have been perennial favorites, while Sarah Palin get-ups were popular last Halloween. What will be the big costume trend in 2009? Master’s Costumes: we’ll miss you, especially next October.
