Food Star supermarket opens
Shoppers turned out in force for the grand opening of the Food Star grocery store in the former Toys R Us building on Leesburg Pike in Seven Corners on Feb. 14.
Food Star offers a big selection of international items not available in other nearby supermarkets. “We have more varieties of produce, more varieties of other things,” says owner Kevin Yun, who also owns the Food Star on W. Glebe Road in Arlington.
On opening day, employees were handing out $20 gift cards. Food Star also offers a special deal – shoppers who spend $100 or more get a stamp and a free two-liter soda. Collect 20 stamps, and you’ll get a $50 gift card.
Amid all the common fruits and vegetables in the produce section, there are several varieties of coconuts and yams, jicama, kokuma, malanga, eddo, Jamaican flowers, jack fruit, calabaza, and dragon fruit.
In the freezer cases, there are banana leaves, tamales and yellow cherries from El Salvador, mango pieces, Peruvian maize, and cashew apples.
Among the packaged items in the interior aisles, there is coconut juice and pink guava juice from Thailand, canned quail eggs and grass jelly, Ethiopian injera and teff flour, ground smoked herring, spices from Jamaica, Central American baked goods, porridge from Ghana, and dried molokhia leaves from Jordan.
