Free concerts in Annandale continue through the end of August

Polka time with the Continentals at Ossian Hall Park.

Polka and waltz music was on tap at Ossian Hall Park in
Annandale Saturday evening as the Continentals played old-world favorites on accordion,
sax, and drums, including songs in German and Polish.

The Continentals was founded in 1972 as a German oom-pah
band by Mike Surratt, who’s still with the group. More recently, they’ve
expanded their repertoire to include a variety of polka and waltz styles along
with popular dance hits from the 1940s through today.

The show is part of the Spotlight by Starlight series at
Ossian Hall Park on Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. all summer long, usually featuring
the music and dance of a particular country. There’s a schedule change for next
Saturday, Aug. 15: It will be Taiwanese Cultural Heritage Night instead of
Korean Cultural Heritage Night.
After that, there will be just two more concerts at Ossian
Hall Park: Eastern European music by the Gerdan Ukrainian ensemble on Aug. 22
and the Colombian group, El Tayrona, on Aug. 29.
Free summer concerts at Mason District Park, also part of
the Spotlight by Starlight series, take place Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday
evenings at 7:30 through Aug. 30.
Coming up this week: Ruthie and Wranglers (American roots)
on Aug. 9, the U.S. Air Force “Celtic Aire” band on Aug. 12, Wayne Henderson
with Jeff Little and Helen White (bluegrass) on Aug. 14, and the Justin Trawick Group (urban rock) on Aug. 16. Next Saturday, Aug. 15, at 10 a.m., bring the kids to Mason District
Park for comedy with the YOJO Show.
