Free garden club launched for kids

Hands On Harvests, the volunteer organization that manages the demonstration garden at the Eileen Garnett Civic Space in Annandale, is launching a free garden club for children.

The club will meet on Tuesdays at the garden, at 7200 Columbia Pike, 9:30-10:30 a.m., on June 17; July 1, 15, and 29; and Aug. 12 and 26.

The club is for children ages 8-11, although parents can register kids that are a few months younger or older.

Children will plant a sunflower house, explore sunflowers, learn to garden, and create art. Register here.

Children don’t have to be present for all sessions. For instance, the Aug. 26 session is after school starts, but Hands On Harvests wants to ensure the program is open to homeschooled children.

In related news, Hands On Harvests is developing a garden at the AUMC Mission Center on Heritage Drive in Annandale. The plots and paths have been installed and the fence is up. Next steps are building a shed and planting.

Keep Virginia Beautiful has given Hands On Harvests a $1,000 Green Grant for a compost station at the Mission Center, along with bilingual signage and materials for a composting workshop.
