Free speech screening for children offered at libraries

The Fairfax County Health Department is hosting free workshops on speech and hearing development and free speech screening for children ages 3-7 at selected libraries.
The sessions will take place at these libraries in Mason District:
- Culmore Library, 1601 Knollwood Drive, Bailey’s Crossroads – workshop on May 1, 4 p.m.; screenings on May 8, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
- Thomas Jefferson Library, 7415 Arlington Blvd., Falls Church – workshop on May 21, 4 p.m.; screenings on May 28, 1:30-4:30 p.m.
- George Mason Regional Library, 7001 Little River Turnpike, Annandale – screenings on May 28, 1:30-4:30 p.m. No workshop at this location.
The 30-minute workshops are designed for parents who want to learn more about speech and hearing development. Experts will share signs to look for, tips to support children at home, and information about early intervention options. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions and connect with other parents.
Signs that indicate a child should have a screening include not talking as much as other children their age, having trouble pronouncing words, and not responding when called by name.
According to the Health Department, approximately 3 percent to 16 percent of U.S. children and adolescents between the ages of 3 and 21 experience speech and language disorders.
These children can quickly fall behind in school. When these disorders are identified early, children have a better chance of catching up with their peers.
These sessions coincide with National Speech-Language-Hearing Month in May.
