From Annandale Today to the New York Times

Annandale Today’s intern this summer, Shane Gomez, has been named to the New York Times Corps of college writers.

The Times Corp is a highly selective talent-mentorship program for college students aspiring to careers in journalism. Nineteen students from across the country were selected, the NY Times announced Sept. 4. Each participant will be matched with a mentor, who will provide career guidance over a multiyear period.

Shane, a sophomore at the New School in New York City, has been paired with Nicholas Bogel-Burroughs, a national correspondent and investigative reporter at the New York Times.

Shane graduated from Annandale High School in 2024 with a highly rigorous International Baccalaureate diploma. At AHS, he was a staff writer, editorials editor, and, as a senior, the co-editor-in-chief of the student newspaper, the A-Blast.

This summer, he wrote numerous articles for Annandale Today, including stories about weapons detectors in schools, Annandale High School’s bomb shelter, the No Kings Day protests, the new food hall at the Eden Center, and a former courthouse artist at a senior residence.

Annandale High School English teacher Alan Weintraut, the A-Blast advisor, says Shane’s work on Annandale Today was a big help in his acceptance to the Times Corp.
