Fuddruckers will close May 1

Want to have a last meal at Fuddruckers before the restaurant closes? You’ve only got a couple of weeks. Fudds’ last day will be April 30, says manager John Hannah.
The building will be demolished, and a Walgreens drug store with a drive-through pharmacy will be constructed on that site, between Little River Turnpike, Columbia Pike, and Backlick Road in the center of Annandale.

“We’ve been looking for another location in Annandale, but unfortunately, we have not been able to find a site. We have been working with real estate brokers and have made several site visits,” says Toni Niece, vice president of marketing for Luby’s Fuddruckers Restaurants LLC, the Houston-based company that bought the Fuddruckers chain in 2010. “We would have loved to stay but the company was unable to negotiate a new lease with the landlord.”

In recent weeks, many customers have expressed their unhappiness about the closing of Fuddruckers, Hannah says. “Everyone is upset. People have grown up with Fuddruckers in the area.” The family restaurant is a popular spot for sports team parties.
Nearly all the employees have been offered jobs at other Fuddruckers, Hannah says. He will go to the one in Chinatown, and other employees will transfer to Fuddruckers in Alexandria or Fairfax.

  1. I hate that my husband and I have been going thier for lunch or dinner every other Saturday or Friday. and the rest of the restaurants down thier have all most turned to Korean. Fuddruckers was the only one that was realy close to us and reasonable. We will miss a lot as we did when HR Ribsters Left.

  2. a walgreens, really? how bout a walmart? or how bout widen the damn road. gonna miss fuddruckers they have the best burgers.

  3. How about a walkable, bikeable, thoughtful community where people can cross streets safely to go to coffee shops, hamburger places, Korean restaurants, Latin American chicken places, music venues – supporting small businesses, the backbone of America? How about that?

  4. I agree with Liz. To get that in Annandale we will need density and multiuse, and this would have been an ideal site for something bigger than a single story, single use, DRIVE THROUGH (!!!) chain drug store. Which will be with us for decades in all likelihood. Another lost opportunity.

  5. WHAT??? I just saw this. I had no idea. Truth be told, I have not eaten at Fuddruckers in a while. But that has more to do with my slimming waist line than culinary preferences.

I'm very sorry to this lively eatery go. When my daughter attended TJHSST, her classmates would always run over there for a quick dinner or celebration. It is a staple of Little River Turnpike as one heads east into the heart of Annandale.

A drive through chain store? NO!!!! I was hoping we could preserve the last vestiges of small town America on the edges of the big city.

  6. Anyone see the last message on the Fuddruckers message board? "Visit our stores in Fairfax and Alexandria"

I think a "Thank you Annandale for __ good years." or "Thank you Annandale for your business." would have shown a little class.

    1. They've shown a lot of class, actually. At least a day after their official closing, they had people there to greet and redirect. Sometimes, gratitude is understood and doesn't need to be expressed so bluntly.

  7. Hey they do have that empty lot in Springfield where the old Circuit City was just over the bridge next to Kay Jennings Toyota. They could build on there.

  8. We certainly dont have enough night-blinding Walgreens locations already.. They're building these like McDonalds

  9. Liz y Brian, You have got it absolutely right. We need another chain drug store like we need a hole in our collective heads. A livable downtown is what's needed. The Annandale Chamber of Commerce needs to begin thinking of these ideas
