Gas company to impose a surcharge

A meter on an Annandale home tracks gas usage.

Washington Gas customers in Virginia will pay higher bills from August through October 2025 to make up for warmer weather last winter.

Due to above-average temperatures from October 2024 to May 2025, Washington Gas says it collected lower revenues than approved by the State Corporation Commission.

As a result, the utility will impose a surcharge on Virginia customers during the billing months of August, September, and October.

The SCC authorized Washington Gas to impose a Weather Normalization Adjustment on customers’ bills in 2007. If winters are colder than normal, the company gives customers a credit.

The adjustment is not based on a customer’s usage during the specific billing month, Washington Gas says. Instead, it’s based on normal usage on the account and actual weather conditions from the previous heating season.

  1. So we can’t win right ? . I so loved the lower bill . And thought this is great not having to use so much but they found a way to take that joy . Shame on you . Even if we try to save they will find a way to take . 😞

  2. What other business could even get an idea of charging a “we need more money because we did not make enough over a specific time frame” to its customers. Whats the point of “energy saving” plans or devices, or “cutting back on the thermostat” …..? What an insulting thing to do to customers. Great customer treatment….

The State Corporation Commission may have approved it, but that does not make it legal or sensible !
Washington Gas can do it because they have the leverage. So next your electric bill, and water bill will follow, right ?

    1. I completely agree with you Dennis. Then they send useless mailings asking us to sing up for a monthly charge for water line and gas line maintenance. I have gotten one if these mailings every month for the last 6 months. Save money on postage and quit asking when I don’t reply after the first one.

The $10.00 a month increase on my electric bill last month, was not a welcome sight either. And Dominion wants to give me a $10.00 yearly discount for letting them control my thermostat during warm weather. OHN!

  3. To add to my first comment . So we’ve always been told to save money , take electricity also for example ….. to save our money we cut back say turn off lights, cut back the thermostat Etc . Lol so now maybe the electric company will go oh we’ve not been making enough money off you you’ve been turning off those lights too much were going to have to surcharge you 😂😳😱 Come on , it’s not even April fools day 😆
