Wakefield Park in Annandale now has a purple bin for recycled glass, and Braddock Supervisor James Walkinshaw credits the advocacy efforts of Girl Scout Troop 120.
“In early March, I attended a meeting of the North Springfield Civic Association and was greeted by one of the more effective lobbying efforts I’ve encountered,” Walkinshaw states in his newsletter.
“Troop 120 had reviewed the map of existing Purple Can locations, surveyed their neighborhood to demonstrate the demand for glass recycling, and presented me with a petition demanding a bin at Wakefield Park,” Walkinshaw says. “How could I say no?”

After receiving the petition and hand-written letters, Walkinshaw’s office secured an agreement from the Park Authority, identified a suitable location in the park, and worked with the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services to stake a claim on the next available bin.
“Due to COVID-19, it took a bit longer than we had hoped,” he says, “but the purple can is there now.” The county removed all glass recycling bins in March to prevent the spread of COVID and reinstalled them in May.
