Goodwill offers free workshops for older job seekers

The Goodwill Career Center is at the rear of the retail store.

Job seekers age 50 or older can find assistance at the
Annandale Goodwill Career Center. Two free workshops are scheduled this
month, one on resume writing and cover letter preparation on Aug. 17 and
another on effective interviewing and presentation skills on Aug. 24
Both workshop are 10:30 a.m. at the Career Center inside the
Goodwill store at 7031 Columbia Pike, Annandale.

To reserve a place at one or both workshops, call 703-286
-5176, ext. 2. Participants must first register on the Senior Employment Resources (SER) website. There’s no charge to register.
The workshops are run by Woody Prothero, director of SER and
coordinator of the career centers in the Goodwill stores in Annandale and Dale
City. The SER office, formerly located in the same shopping center as the
Annandale Goodwill, closed in 2012 after it lost funding from Fairfax County.
SER continues to operate online, however, providing job listings and
job-hunting resources.
Goodwill formed a partnership with SER last winter to host a
couple of free workshops each month just for senior job seekers. People who
complete the workshops can participate in a mock job interview session to
practice their skills.SER
registrants can also use the computers in the Career Center to search job listings, work on their resume, and learn computer skills.
According to Prothero, there’s growing demand for employees
in nursing and other healthcare positions, while there are declining
opportunities for paralegals and jobs in government contracting.
In addition to the training offered in collaboration with
SER, the Goodwill Career Center offers job assistance to people of any age, as
well as job training to Goodwill employees. Some D.C.-area Goodwill Career Centers, although not the one
in Annandale, provide specialized training for people with disabilities and
former prisoners.
