Haven of Northern Virginia reopens for in-person grief counseling

Haven is based in a former farmhouse that is more than 100 years old.

Haven of Northern Virginia, a nonprofit based in Annandale that helps people deal with grief, has reopened for in-person counseling.

Haven offers emotional support to the bereaved and their families and friends through one-on-one counseling and support groups led by well-trained volunteers. All services are free.

Located at 4606 Ravensworth Road, Haven is open 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday through Friday. Walk-ins are welcome, or contact Haven to make an appointment, 703-941-7000, [email protected].

While Haven is based in a house on the property of Hope Lutheran Church, it is not affiliated with the church. It is nondenominational and nonsectarian. It was founded in 1976.

During the pandemic, Haven has run its drop-in suicide loss support group on Zoom on the first and third Saturdays of the month. Bereavement groups for people who lost a spouse or partner have also been held on Zoom.

Haven counselors have met with clients for individual support on Zoom or by phone. They are now meeting in person as long as the client has been vaccinated.

There isn’t a specific group for people dealing with the loss of a pet, but the staff understands the importance of pets and will offer individual support if needed.

Haven has a need for more volunteers “with a compassionate heart to work with clients, facilitate groups, speak to organizations, and do what is necessary to keep Haven running.” Visit http://havenofnova.org/ for more information.
