When Eric Zimmerman walks into his boxing gym in Annandale, he brings with him global experience, resilience, and a vision for community transformation.

Zimmerman opened Z’s Boxing Gym in late 2024 at 4119 John Marr Drive in Annandale.

Earlier this year, Zimmerman spent three months coaching Team USA at two world-class tournaments in Kazakhstan and the Czech Republic.

“Coaching Team USA on the world stage was a privilege and an honor,” Zimmerman shared. “It was a lot of high-level thinking all the time – mentally and physically draining. Everything we do in a normal boxing gym is just magnified and multiplied to be world-class.”

Zimmerman trained athletes against some of the toughest competitors in the world, including Olympians and world champions. One of his standout memories was watching a young fighter, Malachi Georges, make his world debut against a seasoned Italian champion.

“In the first minute and a half, Malachi was getting picked apart,” Zimmerman recalled. “But then he stepped aside, landed the exact punch we had talked about – a jab to the body and a cross on top – and knocked him out. To see a young fighter execute the game plan like that was amazing.”

Another fight against Kazakhstan’s reigning champion left just as strong an impression. “That one felt like a championship fight, even though it was only a semifinal. The energy was electric, and our guy gave three hard rounds. He even won the first round, which was a huge statement.”

From setback to breakthrough

Zimmerman’s path to coaching wasn’t straightforward. After serving in the Air Force and training internationally in Korea and Italy, he built a team of Army and Air Force athletes on a military base in Italy. But a serious eye injury cut short his own boxing career.

Back home, he trained under well-known coach Eddie Ochoho, but his vision problems kept him from advancing further as a fighter. Rather than stepping away from the sport, he shifted his focus to coaching.

He was deeply inspired by his childhood coach, Coach Lawson, known as “The Law Man.”

“Coaching gave me a way to stay in the sport I loved,” Zimmerman explained. “The Law Man taught me that coaching isn’t just about boxing – it’s about shaping people.”

Bringing it back to Annandale

After months overseas, Zimmerman returned eager to integrate what he learned into Z’s Boxing. “I left for so long because I wanted to practice what I preach – growth, and getting comfortable being uncomfortable.”

“I came back with international training methods, new tactics, and a bigger perspective,” he said. “Boxing isn’t just about one gym being better than another. It’s about elevating the sport across the U.S. and beyond.”

At Z’s Boxing, students learn more than sparring technique and proper form – they experience the art of boxing. The gym emphasizes empowerment and personal growth as much as athletic performance.

“It’s about you versus you,” Zimmerman said. “Some students compete, but many come here without competition on the horizon. They’re here to build a championship mentality.”

That mentality is cultivated in surprising ways. Students journal, reflect, and encourage one another. They form friendships. They gather in a huddle after workouts, chanting together and celebrating the sweat and hard work they’ve put in.

“It’s more than a gym – it’s a community,” Zimmerman said with a smile.

Boxing for everyone

For those who may hesitate to step into a boxing gym, Zimmerman has a message: Boxing is for anyone.

“Yes, it can look violent from the outside, but there are safe ways to do it,” he explained. “We play a lot of games – tag games, coordination drills, movements that mimic boxing without actual contact. People build skills, confidence, and athleticism before they ever step into a ring.”

What students discover is that boxing is one of the most empowering sports available. “It’s a hard, hard sport,” Zimmerman said. “But if you can get through it, there’s so much to learn about yourself on the other side.”

From world tournaments to local training sessions, Zimmerman’s story is one of resilience, passion, and dedication to growth. And his gym reflects those values. Students are always greeted warmly when they walk through the doors of Z’s Boxing, and they leave not only sweaty, but uplifted.

Z’s Boxing offers a Pee Wee program.

In a community that values health, strength, and connection, Z’s Boxing is more than just a training space – it’s a place where champions, both in and out of the ring, are made.
