Supervisors approve Comp Plan amendment for new housing on Gallows Road

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 25 approved a Comprehensive Plan amendment to facilitate a housing development on Gallows Road across from Woodburn Elementary School.

Madison Homes is proposing to develop 32 single-family homes. Eleven existing single-family homes would be demolished.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission recommended approval of the Comprehensive Plan amendment in July.

The plan amendment increases the density on the 8.11-acre site from the current level of 1-2 dwellings per acre to 3-4 dwellings per acre.

The developer would provide just one access point on Gallows Road, across from Hemlock Drive. Nine existing driveways on Gallows would be removed. A new underground stormwater facility would be added next to the Raintree townhomes.

More details will be discussed when the Planning Commission considers a rezoning application for the project this fall.

There was only one speaker at the hearing. Gerry Andrianopoulos, president of the Raintree Homeowners Association, urged the board to deny the application, citing concerns with traffic, pedestrian safety, flooding, overflow parking, and more dog walkers.

During the board hearing, Mason Supervisor Andres Jimenez said Madison Homes’ plan is “a much more modest and thoughtful approach” than previous proposals for the site.

One previous plan called for 66 townhouses, and another proposed multifamily housing for seniors. Both were strongly opposed by residents.
