Huge spa planned for Mason District

There are plans to transform a vacant four-story office building in an industrial-zoned area in Mason District into a huge health spa.
Spa Forest, as it will be known, will have several soaking pools, saunas, an indoor swimming pool, an infinity pool on a rooftop deck, an activity pool for kids, areas for facials and massages, hair and nail salons, a small fitness center, and food and beverage service.

The facility would provide a “full-day experience,” said David Gill, an attorney for McGuire Woods, who represents the developer, told the Mason District Land Use Committee Feb. 28.
The 140,000-square-foot office building, at 6432 General Green Way, Alexandria, used to house the operations center for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, but has been vacant for the past five years.
The building was purchased in December for $9.75 million by Spa Castle owner Steve Chon, which operates luxury spas in New York and Texas.
Annual memberships would cost “a significant chunk,” Gill said. The daily charge for the facility would be about $50. It could be open 24 hours a day and would accommodate “hundreds of people.” The property includes a two-level garage with 465 parking spaces.
A public hearing before the Fairfax County Planning Commission is scheduled for June 15. After that, the project would need to be approved by the Board of Zoning Appeals and the Board of Supervisors.
Chon says he wants to start renovating the building as soon as the project is approved, and Spa Forest could open nine months later.
