KORUS Festival will take place at NOVA’s Annandale campus

After efforts to keep the popular KORUS Festival at the Kmart parking lot in central Annandale failed, it now appears the three-day celebration of Korean culture will take place at the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
Mike Kim, who is in charge of organizing the festival for the Korean American Association of the Washington Metropolitan Area, credits Board of Supervisors Chair Sharon Bulova for securing the NOVA parking lot for the event. The festival starts Friday evening, Sept. 30, and runs through Sunday.
Kim says the association still needs approval from Braddock Supervisor John Cook and State Sen. Vivian Watts, but he doesn’t think that will be a problem.
Kmart refused to let the festival take place on its property this year, citing problems with noise and damage at last year’s event. Kim is hopeful that potential noise and traffic problems can be addressed at the upcoming KORUS Festival, so people that live near NOVA won’t be inconvenienced.
He would like to invite people from those neighborhoods to a special meeting, in English, next Tuesday, July 5, at the Korean American Association’s office at 7004-L, Little River Turnpike (in the Evergreen complex) in Annandale to discuss noise and traffic control.

We seem to have spoken too soon. Katherine Stramel, community outreach specialist for the the Northern Virginia Community College Annandale campus reports that the KORUS Festival will not take place at NOVA. According to Stramel, "It has been decided due to logistical concerns that the festival will not be held at this venue. The location for the Festival has not been determined."
