Local Asian Americans showcase their cultures at a community celebration

Members of the local Vietnamese, Indonesian, Korean, Filipino, Nepali, and Indian communities celebrated their cultures with performances, crafts, and food at an Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration May 20.

The event, at the James Lee Community Center, was sponsored by the Annandale-based Asian American Community Center and the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Several county agencies and nonprofits were there to publicize their activities and services related to healthcare, English language programs, and advocacy.

Here are some highlights:

A Kumari dance from Nepal.
The Filipino American Young at Heart group.
Crafts from Nepal.
A classical dance from southern India.
A drum performance by the JUB Korean Cultural Center.
Khai Nguyen of the Nova Wushu Academy.
The Vietnamese community presented a fashion show.
Paper crafts by the Friends of James Lee Seniors.
