Local parks offer music on summer nights

The Vietnamese-American Youth String Orchestra.
The Vietnamese-American Youth String Orchestra performed
classical and popular music at Vietnamese Cultural Heritage Night at Ossian
Hall Park on Saturday evening.
The group offers young musicians an opportunity to play in a
professional-level ensemble. It is open to students age 18 and under from all
cultural backgrounds who play an orchestral instrument with reasonable
proficiency and are interested in classical music.

There are just two more free shows at Ossian Hall Park this
summer: Taiwanese Cultural Heritage Night, with music and dance, on Aug. 12 and
the Alexandria Kleztet (jazz and klezmer) on Aug. 19. Both shows are 7:30-8:30
p.m. Ossian Hall Park is at 7900 Heritage Drive, Annandale.

Those performances are part of the Spotlight by Starlight
series, which includes free concerts at Mason District Park (6621 Columbia Pike, Annandale) on Wednesday, Friday,
and Sundays at 7:30 p.m. and children’s shows at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays
through Aug. 25.

Chocolate (bluegrass/folk/funk) on Aug. 9, Veronneau (world jazz) on Aug. 11, Bobby
Thompson & Revelator Hill (blues/rock) on Aug. 13, Hard Swimmin’ Fish (blues/jazz/funk)
on Aug. 16, and the David Kitchen Band (pop/rock) on Aug. 18.
