Luxury apartments in the works for Markham Street in Annandale

fact, a formal proposal hasn’t been submitted to Fairfax County yet.

At this point, Southern Management is planning to construct
a single luxury apartment building with a restaurant on the ground floor, a
company representative says. There is no decision about the number of floors or
the number of units, although an earlier description of the project mentions
310 units. The apartments are expected to be a mix of sizes, including
efficiencies. (Sadly, a bowling alley won’t be included.)
Amenities at what is temporarily known as Markham Place are expected to include high-quality flooring. appliances,
and kitchen and bathroom finishes; shuttle service to Metro; a three-level
parking garage with an outdoor pool and landscaping on top; a fitness center; a
community lounge for residents with printers and wifi; and high-tech elements, such as automated
security at the front desk and the ability to control the thermostat remotely
via smart phone.

This is welcome news if it develops as reported.
But why must it be luxury (aside from a capitalist company making as much profit as possible?) Fairfax County is desperate for more reasonably priced/ decent quality rental housing and not everyone needs granite counter tops, etc! Mosaic and Property Flats (at Dunn Loring Metro) are building tons of $2000+/month effeciencies, but at least they steps from a Metro, w/new feeder buses being planned. The center of Annandale has FIVE feeder roads, but enough traffic. How about apts which are new, clean, energy efficient and REASONABLE in cost? Renters who are not RICH are being sqeezed out of being able to live well. I'd hate to see more EXPENSIVE units built only to stay vacant for WAY too long. Don't forget VONTAGE's big plans to open condos, but had to change to rental units. Are they even fully rented yet?5 years later? This is a very transient area. Annandale can have mass transit to get ANYWHERE from this location. Rental can be consistently 99% occupancy AND profitable. Pls think about it Southern Mgmt Co.
What part of this article were you unable to read? It's called renewing the community to it's former self and attractiveness. NOT continuing to wallow in the decline accelerated by Gross.

Annandale already has more than enough legal and "affordable housing" in the Wedgewood Apartments and others along 236 and which are on the embarrassing "feeder" roads to which you refer, not to mention the 100's of illegal units that the county will not address theough its lax code compliance office. It's time to recreate the value of the Annandale Community Housing Stock where people proudly live and flourish, not loiter and panhandle and often act out their self-gratifying practices in public. Take your idea for attracting more of that population to Vienna, Oakton, McLean, Great Falls, Reston, Falls Church, Fairfax, Fairfax Station, Chantilly, Centreville…so many choices for so much of your time.
Annandale is NOT a transient area and has only become such in the disparate and cheap subsidized projects that you are advocating and which contain the said population.
The Right Idea for Annandale is better quality and more attractive housing and a return
to the flourishing community inside the beltway with easy access to Metro and DC to which I moved several decades ago.
