    1. Society is degrading if you haven’t noticed. A symptom of that degradation is lack of respect in public. Lack of respect in public is evident in rude and dangerous driving. Rude and dangerous drivers are not going to “slow down.” They speed because they have no respect and face no consequences.

You should prepare accordingly for the bad drivers, jaywalkers, crime, lack of enforcement, and everything else that comes with a degrading society. For example, expect someone to go 70 down LRT by the LIDL, which is the same shopping center where a teen was stabbed to death by another teen a few weeks ago in broad daylight. The murderer is out on bail.

      1. Tom Parks is right, society is degrading and it’s because of selfish behavior where it’s everyone for themself. Unless we can balance thinking about others and care for oneself too, then it’ll only continue to go downwards.

  1. Actually society degrading is unlikely the cause of this or other accidents, and is akin to “accelerationist” claims. More likely are the statistical top causes of auto accidents in Virginia:
Distracted driving: This includes using cell phones, eating, talking to passengers, or any other activity that takes your attention away from the road. Distracted driving is a major concern in Virginia, contributing to a significant portion of crashes and near misses.
Speeding: Exceeding the speed limit is a dangerous practice that reduces reaction time and increases the severity of crashes. Speeding was a factor in nearly 20% of all crashes and 46% of fatal crashes in Virginia in 2021.
Driving under the influence (DUI): Alcohol and drugs impair judgment, coordination, and reaction time, significantly increasing the risk of accidents. Though a smaller percentage of crashes overall, DUI accidents tend to be more severe and deadly, accounting for about 6% of crashes but 26% of fatalities in Virginia in 2021.
Aggressive driving: This encompasses behaviors like tailgating, improper lane changes, and running red lights. Aggressive driving creates unpredictable situations and increases the risk of accidents.
Drowsy driving: Fatigue can impair judgment and reaction time similar to alcohol impairment. It’s crucial to get enough rest before driving long distances.
I would add youth/inexperience and medical incidents to this list. MOST of all, condolences and earnest caring to the family of the deceased and all those affected. Very sad day for our community.

    1. Yes this is sad and tragic, but becoming all too common in Annandale and elsewhere in northern VA. Every right to do something comes with responsibility. All of the causes listed above are from people focusing on themselves while exercising their right to do things. We can and will disagree about many things, but respect for others and the law needs to be restored and that starts with enforcement and real consequences. Revoking driver’s licenses for violations sooner is hard and harsh but that would be a good start.

  2. I travel around a lot for work, been to 40 states and multiple cities within states. I can say without a doubt that the most aggressive, rude, and disrespectful drivers. I was shocked when I was driving in Texas/Colorado and people slow down and let you in when you signal you are changing lanes, whereas here they dangerously cut you off. Signaling is not asking for permission, it’s saying you are going to change lanes! When I rode Uber shares, people asked where I was going and helped me with information. You’ll never get folks who want to help you here. Something needs to change in NoVA, right now it’s only a place to make money, but the community aspect is sorely lacking.

  3. Yes agreed, but if if there’s a lot of space, it’s rude for someone to speed up to close the gap. I always let someone in, especially if it’s a merge lane and they will have to slam on the breaks if they don’t have the space merge.
