Mason Crest Elementary School gets new principal
Shin [FCPS] |
Sherry Shin has been named the principal of Mason Crest Elementary School, effective July 2, Fairfax County Public Schools announced May 15.
Since Mason Crest’s first principal, Brian Butler left the school last year, Tim Stanley, a retired FCPS administrator, served as interim principal.
Shin has served as assistant principal at Mason Crest since 2015. Previously, she worked as an instructional support teacher in the FCPS Office of English for Speakers of Other Languages, a math resource teacher at Mount Eagle Elementary School, and a classroom teacher at Bush Hill Elementary School.
Shin has extensive experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and English language learners, FCPS states, and has been involved in the FCPS Cultural Proficiency Team, which is aimed at helping educators understand and use culturally responsive teaching practices.
When Butler and the other former assistant principal, Diane Kerr, announced plans to leave Mason Crest last spring, many parents were concerned about the loss of a particularly effective leadership team and urged FCPS to appoint Shin as principal. Shin was ineligible at that time, however, because she hadn’t been an assistant principal for at least three years.
Mason Crest opened in 2012 in the Broyhill Crest neighborhood in Annandale.
Assuming this is good news for the area?
Yes! I have two kids at Mason Crest and have worked with her. She's great!
