May 22 forum on code compliance focuses on community norms

Neighbors have complained numerous times about this house on Arcadia Road in Parklawn, to no avail. The gutter is falling off, and an addition in the back has been under construction for seven years.

Have you filed complaints with the Fairfax County Department of Code Compliance about a neighbor’s poorly maintained home, unkempt yard, or illegal
home-based business—and the problems persist?
Have you been warned that your home violates a county
ordinance and you’re not sure what the problem is or what to do about it?

Learn more about these issues at a Community Forum on Code Compliance Thursday, May
22, at the Annandale United Methodist Church, 6935 Columbia Pike, Annandale,
6:30-8:30 p.m.

The forum is sponsored by the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services, Department of Code Compliance, and Police Department
and is hosted in partnership with the Annandale Roundable, a stakeholder group
of private and public entities and individuals.
Code compliance and property maintenance is a huge issue in Annandale
and the Mason District. Previous community meetings on this topic sponsored by the Mason District Council have
attracted large crowds, including many people frustrated by lack of enforcement
by county officials.
This forum will focus on “common community norms related to
safety and quality of life issues.” Refreshments will be provided, along with
simultaneous language interpreters.

  1. I think it is a most appropriate look for Mason District. The condition and aesthetics of a house are purely subjective and it should fit into the contents for which it is judged….The norm for Mason District has become the vogue and acceptable slum look, so this house fits perfectly fine……..what's the problem? I think you are being just too fussy.

I am certain that most of our officials at zoning would agree that there are not any egregious violations here and that these conditions are perfectly acceptable. The zoning supervisor should buy the house next door since it fits into the palette of zoning acceptability.

Dah, blight = flight…..just watch those tax revenues fly away.

  2. One problem with the complaint system is that people can use it for harassment. We were "reported" for junk in the yard, which was a total lie.

  3. Would hope folks would attend even if they cannot be there promptly at 6:30 pm. This is our home/community…let's hear from our Cty staffers what is being done and can be done to make it better. Let's learn from the past and move on….
