Metro fares are going up on Sunday

Metrorail and Metrobus fares are increasing by 12.5 percent on Sunday, June 30.

Metrobus fares will rise from $2 to $2.25. Express bus fares will be $4.80.

Metrorail fares on weekdays will go from $2 to $2.25 to $6.75 depending on the distance traveled. Metrorail fares after 9:30 p.m. and on weekends will raise from $2 to $2.25 to $2.50.

Metro Access fares will rise to $4.50. Reduced fare programs, such as MetroLift and senior discounts, will continue to be 50 percent off regular fares.

According to Metro, the increase “will help keep fares in line with cost-of-living adjustments and allows us to keep running our current levels of service.”

Last December, Metro warned it would need to make catastrophic cuts in service due to a $750 million deficit. That scenario was largely averted when D.C., Virginia, and Maryland stepped in with an additional $463 million for Metro. The transit agency also cut $50 million in administrative costs.
