Metrobus routes are changing on June 29
Your Metrobus route and schedule will likely change on June 29 when the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority launches the Better Bus Network.
Better Bus is an initiative to redesign the Metrobus system. WMATA says the goal is to provide “more frequent, consistent bus service across the region and make bus service easier to understand.” The network was approved by Metro’s Board of Directors last November.
A total of 527 bus stops (5 percent of the total number) are being eliminated across the DMV “to decrease travel time and increase reliability.”
All routes have been renamed to show the area served. Routes in Fairfax County, Fairfax City and Falls Church are preceded by “F” and routes in Arlington are preceded by “A.”
The new route between Annandale and Seven Corners, for example, is F26. The new F85 route runs between Americana Drive in Annandale and the Pentagon, via Little River Turnpike and I-395.

The Metro website includes neighborhood profiles showing how the new routes compare to the current ones in Annandale and Falls Church and Bailey’s Crossroads and Lincolnia.

- Columbia Pike and Oak Hill Drive
- Columbia Pike and Oxford Street
- Little River Turnpike and Pineland Street
Bailey’s Crossroads
- Seminary Road and Gorham Street
- Jefferson Street and Leesburg Pike
- Carlin Springs Road and Rt. 3421
- Vista Drive and Rt. 6017
- Leesburg Pike and Charles Street
- Glen Carlyn Drive and Glen Carlyn Drive
- Columbia Pike and Spring Lane
Seven Corners
- Leesburg Pike and Peace Valley Lane
In determining which bus stops to eliminate, WMATA considered how many people use a particular bus stop, its distance from other bus stops, and whether it’s safe to walk to another stop.
Better Bus is the first comprehensive redesign of the Metrobus network since it was created in 1973.
Metrobus fares are not changing as part of the redesign. The base fare for Metrobus trips is still $2.25.
